Winter Storage Tips for your Motorcycle
Keeping up a motorcycle is hard work, especially in the winter. But keeping your frame and motorcycle parts in perfect condition during the snowy months can be done. To ensure that your bike is properly protected during winter months or if it just needs to sit for a period of time, keep the following tips in mind.
1. Apply a penetrating oil spray such as WD40 to all of the exposed metallic surfaces of your bike with the exception of the disc brakes, control levers and footrests. This will help to slow down corrosion. Smaller does at a time are generally better than one large drench.
2. Regularly inspect your brake components and clear away the grit and grime build up as needed. Cold and wet conditions increase grime build up which will make your brake parts freeze up if it’s not kept up with.
3. Clean your bike’s individual parts where much and water collect frequently. You need to give special attention to your engine, radiator, and shock absorber linkages.
4. Be sure that all of your electrical connectors get a good dose of penetrating oil as well, especially on “naked” machines and fully faired models.
5. Attempt to wash the salt and traffic film from your bike after each ride. First use cold water than move to warm. During winter months it is always best to completely dry off your bike after washing.
6. Pay close attention to your tires during the winter and change your wheels when needed. Winter tires are strongly recommended for bikers.
7. Keep your drive chain clean and well lubricated at all times.
8. Make sure all the pivot points on your bike are well lubricated with grease, especially your foot pegs.
9. Act at the first sign of corrosion to combat the speedy growth and make sure you inspect behind all your panels and fairings.
These practical winder tips will keep your bike in good shape. Proper maintenance of your motorcycle parts is always required, but spend some extra time and attention caring for your bike during the colder months.
